Experimental Condensed Matter Physicist | Scientific Data Analysis, DFT and Computational Modelling

Profile Summary

I am a DPhil researcher in Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Oxford, with a First-Class BA and MSci in Natural Sciences (Physics) from the University of Cambridge. My work combines experimental physics, scientific computing and quantitative data analysis to investigate quantum materials, superconductivity and strongly correlated electronic systems. My current research focuses on the electronic, magnetic and superconducting phases of FeSe-based materials under pressure, high magnetic fields and low temperatures. I develop and apply experimental techniques including tunnel diode oscillator measurements, mutual inductance, magnetisation and AC calorimetry. I complement these experiments with density functional theory calculations of electronic band structures and magnetic ordering, as well as computational modelling of multiband superconductors. During my Master’s research at Cambridge, I performed ab initio calculations of helium–surface interaction potentials for strained materials, contributing to the development of mechanical contrast in neutral atom microscopy. I have also developed numerical methods for analysing and modelling heat-capacity data from unconventional superconductors and worked with torque magnetometry, cryogenic systems and high-magnetic-field measurements. My industrial research experience includes investigating metal–graphene contact resistance in graphene field-effect transistors at Paragraf. This involved materials characterisation using Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, alongside cleanroom device-fabrication techniques including photolithography, atomic layer deposition, reactive-ion etching and electron-beam evaporation. I am proficient in Python, MATLAB, Mathematica and C++, with additional experience using Git and high-performance computing. I can support clients with scientific data analysis, curve fitting, uncertainty analysis, computational modelling, DFT-related research, scientific programming, literature reviews, technical writing, publication-quality visualisation and the independent review of physics and materials-science problems. Alongside my research, I teach undergraduate electronics at Oxford, mark British Physics Olympiad papers and tutor physics and Oxford and Cambridge admissions. These roles have developed my ability to explain technically complex material clearly, identify errors in mathematical reasoning and produce rigorous, well-structured feedback. I have presented my research through conference talks and posters and am contributing to several research manuscripts currently in preparation. I am particularly interested in clearly scoped projects involving condensed matter physics, quantum materials, superconductivity, surface science, graphene devices, computational physics and quantitative analysis. I place a strong emphasis on transparent communication, reproducible workflows and careful technical documentation.
