Profile Summary

I have worked on a wide variety of fields and on a plethora of pathological and physiological contexts, from basic to translation and then pre-clinical and clinical research: 1) I started with a project titled "Design of a PCR tool to evaluate the geographical origin of pandemic strains of Vibrio cholerae", which I successfully completed using preserved genetic elements associated with various epidemiological origins and variable elements within the CTX gene. The project allowed me to acquire expertise in microbiology, bacterial culture, PCR and assay design, genetics, gene annotation, primer design, and epidemiology. 2) I proceeded with a project titled "Evaluate of the immunological effects of PKC-theta inhibition as a possible pharmacological target in Duchene muscular dystrophy", which I successfully completed realizing that the PKC-theta has an important role both in immune cells (like T cell and macrophages, affecting their cross-talk) and in muscle cells regeneration. Hence, despite being a good target for immunomodulation, its inhibition is detrimental in muscular dystrophy, preventing the replacement of degenerative fibers with new ones. The project allowed me to acquire expertise in muscle biology, immunology, inflammation, drug discovery, T cell and macrophage biology, use of animal models, surgery, histology, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, T cell transplant, immunodeficient mice, inflammation/regeneration/fibrosis cycles, in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro studies 3) I then worked on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, working on both decellularized and synthetic scaffolds and evaluating their potential for cell differentiation (muscle stem cells, C2C12, patient derived dental pulp stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells) 4) I proceeded with several projects focused on immunology, aging, muscle biology, and body metabolism: (i) how mitochondria age in glycolytic and oxidative muscles, allowing me to acquire expertise in mitochondrial function, dynamics, and on the assays used to evaluate it; (ii) how CCL11 affects body metabolism and aging, allowing me to acquire expertise on immunoassays, the cross-talk between the hypothalamus, the liver, the skeletal muscle, and the adipose tissue, on adipose tissue beiging, and on behavioral studies on mice and rats; (iii) how cold reperfusion affects heart ischemia in pigs, allowing me to acquire expertise on apoptosis, heart physiology and pathology, autophagy, and necrosis; (iv) how the immune milieu changes in skeletal muscle throughout aging, allowing me to deepen my expertise in immunology and flow cytometry 5) I then worked on a wide range of projects focused on the evaluation of the effects of fasting and fasting mimicking diets on mice and humans in various contexts: aging, hypertension, cancer, metabolic disorders (diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity), cognitive decline, chemobrain, muscle aging and regeneration, muscle cell differentiation, muscle strength. For these projects I have coordinated and partnered up with data analysts, biostatisticians, core facilities, and clinical research organizations. Through these projects I have acquired 3 patents. These projects also allowed me to acquire expertise in clinical study design, regulatory affairs, clinical data analysis, nutrition, nutritional interventions design, placebo design, patients enrollment, clinical research, and deepened my expertise in stem cell biology, exercise sciences, behavioral sciences, cognitive tests, flow cytometry, biostatistics, and articles writing. I am particularly interested in helping nonprofits, therefore my hourly rate is very low as compared to my expertise.
