Profile Summary

Ph.D. in biomaterials with an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset. My expertise includes project design and management, biomaterials design, protein extraction and characterization, cell culture, synthesis, characterization, and analysis of tissue engineering scaffolds, machine learning, data mining, and visualization, experimental design, bioinformatics analysis, recombinant DNA technologies, nanotechnologies, design of anti-aging products, development of business models and design thinking. I enjoy learning every day, working on new ideas, and devising feasible solutions to broadly relevant problems. I am currently developing technologies for precision medicine applications. My intellectual curiosity and passion for creating innovative therapies and healthcare products led me to pursue my Ph.D. in Biomaterials; however, I focused my research on precision medicine applying proteomics and data science to the development of heart and pancreas tissue engineering technologies. I am an autodidact, and knowing the potential of data science learned the R environment. Throughout my Ph.D. education, in addition to improving my research and analytical skills, I kept up my interest in the innovation and business of science. I participated in innovation and entrepreneurship contests to explore how science is applied in the business world. I was a finalist pitching my master’s degree project, a tissue engineering skin substitute, in the Santander Award for Business Innovation (2017) and Socialab’s Challenge Impact Ideas (2016). These experiences gave me the ability to communicate clearly my projects to the business and science publics. Currently, I am studying the genetic associations with diseases, RNA expression of proteins in different tissues, gene ontology, protein interaction, protein amino acid sequence, and the aging process, with machine learning and bioinformatics to discover and formulate novel therapies, drugs, biomaterials, nutraceuticals, and cosmeceuticals. Data science projects that I have developed: - A data-based app to explore and analyze all proteins in the human body quickly, interactively, and easily. - An R shiny app that uses machine learning to predict whether a patient needs surgery and how many procedures based on their age, sex, and diagnosis. - An R shiny app for personal finances that analyze income and expenses, automatically adds debts and investments with or without interest in a simple and easy-to-use graphical interface. - A hybrid model using Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) to forecast NASDAQ's stock market data. -github.com/josuejv
