Profile Summary

I currently serve as the Director of the Cancer Vaccine Initiative and Leader of the Cancer Immunology, Inflammation and Tolerance Program of the Georgia Cancer Center of Augusta University. I currently work half time at Augusta University and spends the remainder of my time in San Diego, CA serving as a private consultant and as an Adjunct Professor, Scientific Associate in the La Jolla Institute of Immunology. Previously, I served as Professor of Immunology of the Moffitt Cancer Center . Prior to Moffitt, I was a Professor of Immunology at the Mayo Clinic where I initiated 3 clinical trials using peptide-based vaccines for various types of cancer and Epstein Barr Virus. I have several US patents issued and have authored more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications. I obtained my MD and PhD from the National University of Mexico. After my postdoctotal training at MIT, I worked in several Pharma /Biotech companies including: Centocor, T Cell Sciences Inc., Dupont and Cytel/Epimmune. At the Wistar Institute I worked in the Rabies Virus Unit developing subunit vaccines against this virus. I am a member of the American Association of Immunologists, and the American Association for Cancer Research. I served as a charter member of tof several NIH Study Sections, was a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Cancer Institute, and Section Editor of the Journal of Immunology and Associate Editor of Cancer Research.
