Profile Summary

I'm actually principal research scientist at Tor Vergata University in Rome. My basic research is mostly focused on mechanisms and inflammatory/neoplastic signals that sustain and amplify colon carcinogenesis. During my PhD program I focused on colon cancer prevention and my studies contributed to identify some of the basic mechanisms by which mesalazine, an anti-inflammatory compound largely used in the management of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases, interferes with colon cancer cell biology and to develop a derivative of mesalazine, which has potent anti-neoplastic effect on colon cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. During my postdoc career, I focused on the immune-inflammatory networks involved in the pathogenesis of inflammation-associated and sporadic colon cancers. In this context, my studies established for the first time that IL-21 is highly expressed in samples of colitis-associated and sporadic colon cancer patients and plays a crucial role in the mechanisms that control the incidence and ultimate growth of colon tumors driven by chronic inflammation. In 2011, I was a winner of My First AIRC Grant (MFAG), which helped me to start an independent research career. Supported by such funds, my team contributed to characterize the type of immune cell infiltrate in sporadic colon cancer tissue thus providing a detailed analysis of immune cell-derived signals that stimulate colon cancer cell growth. The related paper was published in Oncogene and received enormous publicity in the field.
