Profile Summary

I am an animal breeder, with vast experience in teaching genetics and animal breeding. Having worked in the livestock industry before at policy level, one of my passions is to advocate for livestock policy changes towards creating a conducive socio-economic environment in which farmers can derive maximum benefits from their livestock, especially through genetics and animal breeding regulation and legislation. I have been participating in research and development projects that are using animal breeding as the major tool for livestock improvement. My other interests include livestock data mining and knowledge management as effective tools for helping farmers make informed decisions about their livestock. I am working towards assisting farmers into organising themselves into breed associations in order to effectively realise more livestock genetic improvement. I am working on discovery and characterisation of structural variants, especially copy number variants, in the goat genome, using next-generation sequence (NGS) data. I have been working with other researchers on finding out if the use of genomic data may make the implementation of community-based goat breeding programs in low-input/ low-output production systems more effective. We are trying to identify informative single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers for goat traits which farmers would like to be improved in the community breeding centres in Uganda and Malawi. A custom SNP chip comprising the identified markers will be produced to be used for routine genotyping of animals in the community goat breeding centres. This is expected to facilitate selection of the goats at a lower cost. I have also worked genomic indicators of Pinzgau cattle diversity. The work focused on characterization of the diversity in Slovakian and Austrian Pinzgau cattle populations with the use of molecular genetic tools, with emphasis on estimation of genomic inbreeding coefficients via runs of homozygosity, as well as determination of global and local admixture levels.
