Profile Summary

I have more than fifteen years of research experience in the design, synthesis and evaluation of biologically active peptides and small molecules. I offer proficiency in peptide and small molecule synthesis, and analytical techniques including but not limited to HPLC, Mass Spectrometry and Fluorescence Microscopy. I am also skilled in various classical molecular biological techniques such as Western blot, gel electrophoresis, ELISA, PCR, and in vitro gene silencing. I have also conducted in vivo drug testing in small animals. I am trained in aseptic mammalian and bacterial cell culture and maintenance. I am self learned in molecular modeling and visualization softwares such as PyMOL and UCSF Chimera. I conduct established in vitro molecular biological experiments to study the effect of therapeutic drug leads in a biological system. I also perform in vivo dosing of said drug leads in mice models. My current postdoctoral research is focused on developing peptides and small molecules that modulate vascular angiogenesis with a particular focus on ocular and oncologic disorders. I have designed, screened and evaluated novel peptide drug leads that can modulate blood vessel growth by targeting Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), Tyrosine kinase with Ig and EGF homology domains 2 (TIE2), and Sodium-coupled Neutral Amino acid Transporter 1 (SNAT1 or SLC38A1) mediated angiogenesis. I have also identified and evaluated novel Thalidomide derived drug leads that possess anti-angiogenic and/or anti-myeloma activity. For my doctoral thesis, I, along with a team of scientist with varying backgrounds, developed a lipidated peptide platform to screen for ligands that improve GPCR function. We tested our modified peptide ligands in cell and animal-based assays and reported improved GPCR activity in peer-reviewed journals. For another project, we synthesized and evaluated the effect of selective fluorination on the biological activity of Glucagon-like peptide-1.
