Profile Summary

In short, I am a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) pharmacologist with over 20 years of experience in molecular signaling, therapeutic design, translational development and project/personnel/infrastructure management. I have initiated and developed the concept of multidimensional GPCR signaling profiles and their relationship to a broad range of diseases ranging from cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, psychiatric disorders and neurodegenerative conditions. I have an enormous breadth and depth of experience and skills with respect to program initiation, refinement, development and delivery. My experience is derived from working at some of the best institutions in the world and some of the most influential scientists in their field. I have brought this richness of experience together now to develop a new range of GPCR-based therapeutics that can actually prevent the development of disease itself as well as possessing the capacity to reverse existing cellular damage. I received a First Class Honors BSc in Pharmacology and won the Pfizer Prize for undergraduate research, followed by a PhD as the Ackroyd Brotherton & Brown Scholar for the University of Leeds. I completed my post-doctoral training at Duke University with Prof. Robert Lefkowitz (2012 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry) where I helped pioneer the concept of beta-arrestin signaling that I had started as a PhD student in the UK. Next, I served as PI and Head of the Receptor Pharmacology Section at the Medical Research Council at the University of Edinburgh where I developed novel signal and tissue selective GnRH-based therapies for prostate cancer and benign prostate hyperplasia. Following this I next was recruited to the NIH-National Institute on Aging/Johns Hopkins Medical School to head the Receptor Pharmacology Unit where my team developed the concept of aging-specific pharmacotherapeutics as well as novel bioinformatic platforms for high-dimensionality data analysis of pharmacological data. I continued this research, developing multiple therapeutic strategies and further theories of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling profiles in my positions of Adjunct Director of the Department of Molecular Genetics (VIB) and also Vice-Chair of the Department of Biomedical Science at the University of Antwerp/VIB. I am currently developing novel multidimensional GPCR therapeutic pipelines for aging-related disorders. I am also in the process of generating our first start-up company, HeptOME so stay tuned for some real breakthroughs !
