He then pursued a Master of Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Finally, he obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. His research during his Ph.D. focused on advanced composites machining, specifically the mechanical and laser drilling of thick carbon fibre-reinforced polymer composites (CFRP). Dr Sharizal has expertise in several areas, including laser materials processing, advanced machining, sustainable manufacturing, additive manufacturing, and systems engineering/engineering management. He has extensive knowledge and experience in managing the integration of educational institutions with core content standards, curriculum development, assessment, and professional development. Dr Sharizal is skilled in coordinating teams and providing guidance to solve scientific and technical problems. He has a strong background in manufacturing and product engineering, with a focus on enhancing key processes. Additionally, he is well-versed in emerging technologies and trends for future application in accordance with sector strategies. With over ten years of professional experience in several industries, Dr Sharizal has developed his analytical and management skills in several different situations from manufacturing to business administration. For example, when he was involved in designing systems for: • Moving parts within manufacturing plants; • Improving the product and manufacturing systems design; • Getting goods from a company to customers, including finding the most profitable places to locate manufacturing or processing plants; • Evaluating how well people do their jobs; • Networking with suppliers and government agencies. He learned how to get the work done most efficiently, balancing many factors-such as time, number of workers needed, available technology, actions to take, achieving the end product with minimal errors, safety, environmental concerns, and cost. One of the prominent projects when he worked in one of the manufacturing companies is when he conducted a reliability analysis on production area by using the method called 'Assembly Line Balancing'. Several things needed to be considered in this project such as sequence of tasks is restricted (i.e. there is a required order), precedence constraints, there is a production rate needed (i.e. how many products needed per time period), and design the line to meet demand and within constraints. He managed to reduce the idle time by 45% and able to rectify on the safety concern (i.e. some of the machines were required to be replaced and potentially can harm the workers). He also involved in a project that he applied the method called 'Linear Programming' in order to achieve the best outcome (such as maximum profit or lowest cost) in a mathematical model and he successfully saved 30% of production cost when implementing a new product design. These accomplishments demonstrate that Dr Sharizal has significant experience with manufacturing technology and engineering management, which deals with the estimation, prevention, and management of high level failure risks and uncertainties. Overall, Dr Sharizal's industry experience, combined with his teaching and research background, allows him to bring practicality and real-world knowledge to his work in the classroom and research projects.
