With the world facing increasing water stress, I focused on the immense potential of wastewater as a valuable resource, especially in the context of India. Key responsibilities and achievements: 1) Wastewater characterization: I conducted a study on how ambient temperature affects the characteristics of raw domestic wastewater. This research highlighted the need for better sample handling and led me to advocate for on-site analysis facilities, making it easier to maintain the integrity of samples during transport. 2) Method Development: To address the challenges due to expensive wastewater analysis methods, I developed single-wavelength colorimetric tests. These simplified methods allow for quick assessments of key parameters like bacterial load, COD and turbidity, paving the way for more accessible testing in economically disadvantaged regions. 3) Enhancing Treatment Efficiency: I focused on optimizing the sewage treatment process at the Prasanthi Nilayam township, where I explored the use of a plant-based coagulant-disinfectant, Ecoclean-2300. By employing statistical methods to fine-tune treatment conditions, I discovered that we could increase the volume of treated effluent produced by three times, providing a more efficient alternative to traditional methods. 4) Creating a Roadmap for Change: My work culminated in a comprehensive assessment of the entire wastewater treatment process, from collection to storage. I developed standard operating procedures and maintenance protocols to ensure that improvements are sustainable and can be monitored effectively.
