Profile Summary

I am a seasoned journalist turned researcher turned academician
with over a decade-and-a-half of combined professional, research and teaching
experience. The media operations in the oil monarchies of the Persian Gulf
region caught my fancy. My journalistic instinct prompted me to study the role
media plays in the political development of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)
States. Bringing together my journalistic temperament and research skills I was
successful in producing an original and ground-breaking PhD thesis that
demolished more than a few myths about the GCC media. My area of concern in
PhD is to study “How Far” and “How Does” the Media in the GCC states affects
the trajectory of political development. The study explores the
constraints/challenges and opportunities for the media to operate in a more
decisive and democratic manner so that it acts as catalyst for political
development. Moreover, the study also investigates the role of Civil Society in
each of the individual GCC states in strengthening the media that, in turn, would
lead to media coming out of the shackles of state.
The first decade-and-a-half of the twentieth century is a critical phase in the
modern Turkish history. The then Seat of Islamic Caliphate experienced
political turbulence during this period. The nationalistic Urdu press of colonial
India steadfastly stood behind the Turks. Urdu weekly The Al-Hilal (1912-14) of
MaulanaAbulKalam Azad provided the detailed battlefield accounts and other
related political developments in Turkey. The critical Content Analysis of the
reporting of Turkish affairs in The Al-Hilal forms the subject-matter my
Master of Philosophy dissertation. A science enthusiast since childhood and
Eager to Discover Mother Earth I decided to go in for Geology majors at

theUniversity (Undergraduate) level. It was a wonderful journey as I dug deeper
into the Earth, climbed high on the rocks and scaled ever new heights on the
mountains.
Curious mind and a deep-seated interest in the news prompted me to
takeMaster’s in Journalism and Mass Communication. Coming from a Science
background it was quite natural for me to opt for Science Communication special
paper. Studying Science Communication was wonderful as I learned the
fundamental principles of communicating science to the public. I also
familiarized myself with the concept of Public Understanding of Science (PUS)
and its various schools. Soon after I completed my Master’s I was placed at the
editorial desk of a TV news channel. It was a challenging at the same time
exciting opportunity. Here I learned the grammar of television news
writing/editing. My job profile included but not limited to News Editing,
translation (English-Urdu), Run Order/Down preparation, T.P. Correction, airing
of news and Newsroom supervision. After a brief spell with the TV, I joined All
India Radio (government radio channel) as editor. My subbing skills were at their
best while I worked as Sub-Editor at Sahara Newspaper (Urdu). Here I was
involved in a lot of journalistic activities. I supervised computer aided pagemaking and guided feature pages/supplements preparation. As a practitioner of
journalism I learned the fine tricks of the trade and honed up my professional
skills. During my industrial exposure I was perturbed at the dearth of quality
stuff on popular science especially in the vernacular (Urdu Language) and the
representation of Arabs/Muslims in the inter/national media. The former
provoked me to take up Science Communication as a mission of my life. As Incharge of the Science and Technology Section of Rashtriya Sahara Newspaper,
I ran a series of specialized popular science columns. The serialized columns
covered a variety of popular science themes including Solar System, Balanced
Diet, Cell Biology, Sedimentology, Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology etc.

My first academic stint was at the Centre for Culture Media and
Governance(CCMG), JamiaMilliaIslamia, New Delhi, India where I taught
Dynamics ofTransnational Communication to theM.A.students. Teaching of
this papergave me insights into the evolution, development and functioning of
international media and Transnational Media Corporations (TMCs) and related
concepts. I also taught Introduction to Communication and Communication
Research to the Undergraduate students. At the Department of Mass
Communication of Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India I taught a variety of
papers/courses in journalism and mass communication at the Post Graduate level
that include Radio
Production, Communication Research, Advertising and Public Relations
andScience Communication.At Manglayatan University, Aligarh I worked
asAssistant Professor-III –cum-Head of Department at theDepartment of
Journalism and MassCommunication.Here, I taught UG & PGstudents a bouquet
of papers/courses that included: Print Journalism,Communication Research,
New Media and Online Journalism, Media Laws andEthics, Public Relations
and Corporate Communication, Global Media Scenario, Fundamentals of
Communication. My teaching is technology aided and is ahealthy mixture of
theory and practice.
