Profile Summary

I have recently completed my PhD at the University of Manchester studying the determinants of cardiac progenitor fate and how this may be applied to cardaic regeneration. This research was mostly based around examining the genetic identity and later fate decisions of cardiac progenitor cells generated from a human embryonic stem cell model of differentiation. I gained skills in 2D stem cell culture and differentiation and resultant characterisation of cells by qPCR, histology and flow cytometry. I also FACS sorted and sequenced cells using RNAseq and ATACseq to determine differences in gene expression and chromatin landscape. This required me to learn basic skills in R, IPA and GREAT. I have also done some work on enhancer regulation of transcription factor expression, including identifying potential enhancers based on ATACseq and ChIPseq datasets and developing luciferase plasmids to investigate their relative activity within the stem cell differentiation system. Outside of lab work, I also have an interest in science commmunication and teaching. I was public engagement representative for my CDT cohort and had responsibilities of organising events for British Science Week to promote our research to a wide audience. I also have some experience teaching undergradaute and masters level lab sessions, and tutoring GCSE and A level students in Biology and Chemistry.
