Profile Summary

I hold a MSc in geology and a PhD in isotope geochemistry. My research interests focused on the formation and evolution of our planet - especially in its first 500 million years - and its relationship to other planets and meteorites. I particularly enjoy the conjunction of fieldwork and detailed laboratory analysis of rock, soil and biological samples to reconstruct the accretion of a planetary body, periods of great volcanism and the formation of natural resources. The data collection, analysis, interpretation and finally the preparation of conference presentations and papers for publication in scientific journals is most satisfying to me. I have written a number of scientific papers and acquired just short of $1million in research and infrastructure funding. A large portion of my academic career also involved developing new laboratory methods and mass spectrometry protocols in order to determine the age of rocks and meteorites as well as the analysis of trace metal isotope markers such as tungsten, platinum and osmium. Using these novel methods and collaborating with other experts so that we can understand the evolution of a marine ecosystem or track anthropogenic contamination has been very thrilling. Recently, I have switched gears and began focussing on different aspects of environmental protection in Florida. I am working at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Where I held a ICP-MS Analyst position before being promoted to Chemist Specialist. Now I am using my experience as a geologist, geochemist and peer reviewer in my function as Environmental Specialist in the Federal Programs Section of the Division of Waste Management, where I am tasked with providing regulatory oversight, report review and environmental clean up at Department of Defense installations. I have a curious mind and am happiest when I have a challenging, innovative project and am able to process new information so that new ideas emerge and surprising research directions become apparent. I have taught a number of university courses in my career and am very comfortable giving presentations in front of peers or students, but some of the most rewarding experiences come from explaining my research to the general public. This requires that you have to present facts accurately and in a visually appealing fashion but you cannot ‘hide’ behind academic jargon or glance over important facts.
