Profile Summary

Initially, I received training via my PI’s latest graduate student and assisted with her project about the effects of various nutritional supplements on cardiac function in Drosophila melanogaster.  My job was to maintain a healthy stock population of the flies and perform microsurgery on the test subjects in order to get an optimized view of the heart tube and count the beats per minute.  After the student had graduated, I was entrusted with my own stock population and was given free reign to design and perform my own experiments.  
	My first project concerned the effects of α-tocopherol, also known as vitamin E, on longevity.  In addition to writing papers, reviewing previous literature, working out logistical issues, and fixing various problems encountered in lab environments, I participated in the West Coast Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research (WCBSUR) Conference.  My next project investigated the role of gut microbiota in the longevity of the fly and observing the effects of changing microbial populations on overall health.  With this experiment, I learned about proper microbial culture techniques.  It was also one of our department’s first interdisciplinary studies involving both physiology and microbiology.  Simultaneously, I trained by taking an animal tissue culture course where I learned how to successfully isolate mammalian stem cells from adipose tissue, culture them, manipulate them, assess their growth pattern, and document the outcomes.  
	After three years in her lab, Dr. Bournias-Vardiabasis, being the head of the university’s Stem Cell Scholars Internship Program, accepted me into the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine’s Bridges program.  The program’s goals are to train students who are interested in stem cell research as well as give them a first-hand experience of graduate-level research.  During the internship, I worked on an ongoing project under my PI, Dr. Jin Nam, at the University of California, Riverside.  The project concerns the utilization of iPSCs for the formation of 3D colonies on top of an electrospun polymer scaffold reinforced by microwells.  The long-term goals of the experiment are to determine the gene expression patterns within individual colonies, optimize the culture microenvironment, and simultaneously differentiate individual colonies into the three germ layers.  After the first couple of months, I successfully optimized the microenvironment for the cells and observed gene expression patterns for both ectodermal and mesendodermal differentiation.  As I continued this work, I also learned how to communicate more efficiently and keep track of available resources.
	After I had completed the internship, I was accepted into USC’s Master of Science in Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine program.  While attending classes, I joined the Rodgers lab and worked under both Dr. Joseph T. Rodgers and one of his postdoctoral students to better refine my data analysis techniques using ImageJ.  I processed image data on muscle fiber size in order to determine morphological differences between young versus old mice, which were subjected to a muscle injury and then allowed to heal prior to dissection.  In addition, I also compared the healing process of young versus old mice post-injury after each group was subjected to either a partial hepatectomy or a sham operation.  In addition to ImageJ, I also learned how to properly utilize PRISM software for more efficient data visualization and processing.
