Profile Summary

ACLAM board-eligible veterinarian and postdoctoral scientist with expertise in microbial-immunity interactions in the context of Crohn's Disease, with an extensive background in both rodent model and human microbiome research in colorectal cancer/Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Enthusiastic about research, science communication/writing (both technical and non-technical), consulting, and advocacy for the health and well-being of laboratory animals. Progress-oriented, highly collaborative and driven to utilize an expansive skillset for the benefit of both academic and industry innovation. After completing veterinary school, I joined the University of Missouri's Comparative Medicine Program in which I combined laboratory animal medicine residency training with a dual PhD. My residency training was focused primarily on veterinary care of laboratory species, histopathology of these species (strong focus on rodents), and study of the regulations and governing bodies of animal research in the United States. Meanwhile, my PhD work focused on understanding how the gut microbiome interacts with the host genome and thereby confers risk associated with colorectal cancer in a mouse model. This work encompassed a wide array of laboratory techniques including molecular biology, microbiological (anaerobic culture), in vivo microbiome testing, functional genomics, and metabolomics. After completing my PhD, I joined the gastroenterology department at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA as a postdoctoral scientist. During my time at Cedars, my primary research focused on host-microbe interactions in patients with Crohn's Disease (CD). I was particularly interested in a phenomenon of CD known as creeping fat, where mesenteric fat becomes inflamed and fibrotic, and can in turn cause severe distress due to gastrointestinal stricture. My goal was to better understand microbial interactions with specific immune compartments in the adipose tissue of these patients. Through this work, I gained extensive experience with bioinformatics analysis of microbiome data, molecular biology techniques, histopathology of gut and adipose tissue, fluorescent imaging, cell sorting, immunoassays, and gnotobiotic mouse models.
