Profile Summary

I am currently the lead post-doctoral researcher on a project developing pest resistant banana. I generate the constructs for transformation into banana, and then assess the resultant transgenic plants for resistance to nematodes. As part of this role I have designed, executed and analysed data for experiments with plants in the laboratory, tissue culture, glasshouse and field. I have knowledge of plant pests and pathogens important to agriculture in the UK and internationally, either directly through my own work or through interactions with others in my immediate research group. Pests and pathogens that include plant parasitic nematodes, weevils, bacterial and fungal diseases of banana, potato, rice, cassava and root vegetables. I have reported the progress of my work to the wider scientific community through presentations at international conferences, reports to funding bodies, reports to government organisations and peer reviewed papers. I also lecture on plant pathology for a second year undergraduate module, supervise final year undergraduate laboratory projects and arrange and provide training in Leeds and Uganda to African researchers in monitoring plant growth under biotic stress and in molecular biology techniques.
