Profile Summary

My research has consisted of exploring ecological factors influencing the endangered Mississippi sandhill crane population. I studied biotic and climatic drivers of trends in the historical crane population, the influence of current habitat food production on the crane population, and I used GIS analysis to classify land cover characteristics and relate those to crane population dynamics. My findings have been used to inform refuge management decisions and aid toward realizing the goal of a self-sustaining wild Mississippi sandhill crane population. In conducting this research, I developed strong quantitative and writing skills. I have communicated my research through presentations to scientific and general audiences, and peer-reviewed publications. I also gained experience working with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and other conservation organizations. My other projects have included a community assessment of land preservation options in and around Dutchess County, NY. Through this I became familiar with land preservation methods such as establishing conservation easements and sale or transfer of development rights. For this project I produced a report which provided an overview of land preservation techniques, primarily for the benefit of individual landowners who want to protect their land in perpetuity. There have been many innovative approaches to land preservation over the past several decades that can involve myriad stakeholders, including landowners, municipal governments, nonprofit organizations, farmers, and others. The report can be used as a quick reference to some of these approaches for people who want to act on their desire to preserve and protect their land. I am passionate about conservation, and am excited to help you with your project whether by writing, editing, researching, or GIS and statistical analysis.
