Profile Summary

In 2009, I graduated in biochemistry at the University of Salamanca, where I collaborated with Dr. Rodriguez’s group from 2007-2009, thanks to a grant from the Spanish Ministry of Education. This experience allowed me to approach, for the first time, to the scientific method. I was trained in enzyme kinetics to evaluate the inhibitory properties of b-lactams against serine hydrolases involved in lung tissue damage and antibiotic resistance. The results were included in my degree thesis. After graduating, I joined to the group of Dr. Ganfornina at the Instituto de Biología y Genética Molecular (Valladolid), for an intensive short stay of two months. There I had the opportunity of gain experience in both genetics and molecular biology through the participation in two projects related to the study of the role of lipocalins in aging and neurodegeneration. After this experience, I decided to increase my knowledge to better understand the molecular basis behind the biological processes and, as a consequence, I graduated in chemistry at the University of Valladolid (2011). In 2012, I began my scientific career when I was granted with a FPI fellowship from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. I was a PhD student in the Protein NMR group at the Instituto de Química Física Rocasolano (IQFR), in Madrid, under the supervision of Prof. Bruix and Dr. Jiménez. I had the opportunity to approach to the study of biomolecules from a biophysical and structural perspective. I employed NMR spectroscopy and other biophysical techniques to investigate molecular recognition events involving proteins, peptides, membranes, and carbohydrates. I participated in projects comprising different systems interest, including membrane-active peptides, carbohydratebinding modules, switch peptides... With a common thread: the study and characterization of molecular interactions and their mechanisms. I addressed this goal through structural elucidation, dynamics, and interaction analysis. As I had the opportunity of investigating many different biological systems during my PhD, I am used to deal with diverse projects and assimilate new information quickly. During my PhD, I made two short stays (2014, 2015) at the Prof. Anne S. Ulrich's group at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Karlsruhe, Germany), which is a world reference in the application of solid-state NMR techniques to the study of membrane-active peptides on biological membranes. I performed an exhaustive work learning novel ssNMR methodologies to extract accurate data about orientation in membrane-associated peptides. Additionally, I received a rigorous qualification in other techniques, like circular dichroism, and microbiological assays. From 2017 to 2020 I have been working as a postdoc at the IQFR (CSIC), CBMSO (CSIC) and Allinky Biopharma extending my NMR skills applied to drug development in the cancer field. From 2020 to 2022, I held a postdoctoral position at Universidad Complutense de Madrid where I investigate cell nucleus mechanics by optical tweezers and its relationship with cancer and immunology. I am currently working at the Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas (CSIC) as a postdoctoral researcher in the field of biophysics applied to the study of nanoelectromechanical systems for intracellular measurements.
