Profile Summary

My research integrates ecology, evolution, conservation, population genetics, biogeography, and environmental sciences. I have been conducting field and lab-based research for over 20 years, particularly on waterbirds as indicators of environmental change. Teaching, program management, technical writing, and community engagement are pillars in my research career. Leading and contributing to collaborative studies of Arctic seabirds and ecosystems, coastal environments, high altitude shorebirds, and conservation of species in arid landscapes, I have conducted research throughout the Americas while based at Queen's University in Canada, while working with Environment and Climate Change Canada, with the Arctic Institute of North America at the University of Calgary, and with San Diego Zoo Global in California. As part of these studies, I investigate the ecology of species, population connectivity, speciation, mating systems, reproductive success, adaptations to harsh environments, diet, and environmental changes that may impact species and ecosystems. My work includes research and applications at the interface of human/wildlife landscapes. I have collaborated with cross-sectorial partners, government agencies, the non-profit sector, and with local and international communities, from the circumpolar Arctic to Tierra del Fuego, working on monitoring programs of birds and long-term studies tracking environmental change. I teach post-secondary level courses in Ecology, Conservation, and Environmental Sciences, and I lead and co-organize community engagement initiatives and applied conservation efforts.
