Profile Summary

My education consists of degrees initially in chemistry and mathematics before moving into environmental physics via my knowledge in mathematics. I worked for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) initial as a technician in the soil physics section of Soil Bureau and was the Group leader for Soil Water Processes before moving to CSIRO. I was recruited to the soil physics group in the Centre for Environmental Mechanics in 1991 and in 1997 with the formation of CSIRO Land and Water was transferred to Brisbane to co-lead a project for the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Sustainable Sugarcane Production on acid drainage from acid sulfate soils. This resulted in my appointment as the Chairman of the International Working Party on Acid Sulfate soils and the organisation of an international conference in 2002. I was the leader of the Agriculture, water and Environment section in CSIRO Complex Systems Group from 2003-07. I was appointed Research Leader for Catchments and Climate in the eWater CRC in 2008. I resigned from CSIRO in 2011 and formed my consulting company Freeman Cook & Associates Pty Ltd. I am an Honorary Professor in the school of Agriculture and Food at The University of Queensland and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Australia Rivers Institute at Griffith University. All of this has given me an experience in the application of mathematics and physics to a wide range of environmental problems. I have modelling skills in the HYDRUS suite of programs (water and solute transport), Matlab, Maple and R. My research work has covered a wide range of environmental issues, and some are listed below: • Soil physics; methods for measuring and modelling water solutes and gases • Hydrology; surface and subsurface flow on sloping surfaces, water quality modelling using statistical methods for catchments • Limnology: measurement and modelling of evaporation from water bodies • Microbiology: effect of water status on soil respiration and transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide in soil • Acid sulphate soils: acid drainage, generation of acidity, recovery of lake and soil sediments from acid generation • Mine spoil: modelling of water and solute transport in settling spoils, salt crust suppression of dust • Waste water: co-development of FILTER method, development of modelling tools for subsurface drip irrigation of waste water • Scaling methods: for pesticides from annual application, nitrous oxide generation from urine patches to paddock and regional scales
