Profile Summary

I am an evolutionary biologist focusing on modeling and reconstructing evolutionary patterns, studying extant and extinct vertebrates. I am currently a visiting scholar at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) (Germany) where I obtained my PhD, defending my thesis (October 2022, magna cum laude) dealing with evolutionary patterns of mammal bone morphology. I am proficient in R programming (as evinced by R codes published with my PhD papers and my contribution to the development of the package ‘indianaBones’, https://github.com/AlessioVeneziano/IndianaBones). Specifically, I am skilled in statistical analyses (descriptive, inferential, univariate, multivariate), data processing, algorithms, functions, Machine Learning, Data mining, Data visualization, Phylogenetic Comparative Methods. I gained experience with other programming languages, as C++ (to program an Arduino Uno Kit, used to drive the rotation of anatomical specimens to be acquired with stereo-photogrammetry) and JAVA (base of the macro scripts of the software ImageJ, in which I am deeply skilled, I published two ImageJ macros with one of my papers as supplementary material). I have experience in collection-based research, i.e. building datasets sampling extant and extinct taxa’s bones, mastering imaging techniques, e.g. μCT and photogrammetry, processing virtual data (using Amira/Avizo, VG Studio), restoration on fossil specimens, creation of high-resolution 3D meshes (using MeshLab, Geomagic, Blender), managing data repositories (including on web platforms). Proficient with quantitative analyses of morphological evolution, studying bone internal (e.g. trabecular architecture) and external anatomy (with 3D geometric morphometrics). I currently have 4 peer-reviewed publications (and other 3 in review or close to submission) and 7 national/international conference communications, I was part of the organising committee of 1 symposium and I independently collaborate with international research groups.
