Profile Summary

During my engineering studies at the University of Aveiro, I obtained theoretical and practical training in chemistry, physics, mathematics, as well as thermodynamics. Furthermore, I got familiar with all laboratory techniques relevant to the sampling, analysis, and treatment of gas, liquid and solid environmental samples. This experience also increased my competence for critical analysis and my fascination for solving problems. After completing my engineering studies I was awarded a Leonardo Da Vinci internship in Spain were I was working in a project collaboration between the University of Aveiro (Portugal) and the University of Elche (Spain). This experience abroad was very fulfilling professionally, as well as personally. I then continued working for some time with the research group at the University in Portugal. During my Master studies I have improved my knowledge and training on the management (e.g. ISO standards, GIS) and technological (e.g. power plant design and construction) aspects of environmental sciences and engineering. This experience also highly improved my language skills (English, Spanish, and German) and the capacity to adapt quickly to new working environments. My Master thesis was focused on the development of an innovative technique using near-infrared spectroscopy and multiple variate analysis to develop models that can estimate the maximum temperatures reached by soils after wildfires. The technique enables to identify in a fast and effective way those areas where intervention should be of more priority. My thesis has been cited in articles of internationally recognized journals. During my PhD at the University of Münster and an early-stage researcher of the EU Initial Training Network (ITN) - Flowtrans (website: www.flowtrans.net), I worked intensively in the laboratory producing mineral replacement reactions with an emphasis on porosity generation in tight rocks. More in detail, I used the replacement of calcite by calcium phosphates and of calcite by fluorite to study porosity generation during mineral replacement reactions using different hydrothermal fluids. My main conclusions were that the reaction kinetics and the chemistry of the product minerals are highly influenced by the type and supersaturation of the fluids used (Pedrosa el al. 2016a). Although calcite dissolution is typically decreased by the increase of temperature, the kinetics of these replacement reactions are increased with temperature (Pedrosa el al. 2016a). Although porosity generation is a typical characteristic of replacement reactions, in one of my studies (Pedrosa et al. 2016b), porosity increase was actually quantified using Nitrogen adsorption, and showed a liner increase with reaction time. A third study showed that the mechanism controlling the replacement of calcite by fluorite is the diffusion of ions through the porous phase (Pedrosa et al. 2017).
