You receive templates and personal guidance, you and your team write, and then receive specific feedback and recommendations, which you should implement independently. Any document may be revisited repeatedly to verify that points have been addressed. - Proofreading. - Finding references in the literature. - Epidemiological or market analysis that demonstrates the need or opportunity. - Adding or organizing references with a citation tool (recommendations for such tools and how to use them will be provided as needed). - Generating diagrams and figures. In a nutshell, as a consultant, I function as your grant administrator and advisor, while your scientific specialists are the lead writers. Since the consultancy is administrative in nature, and designed to shorten a lengthy learning curve and make a technically daunting process accessible and feasible, with no pretense of affecting chances of success, no success fees are requested. With this disclaimer in mind, the guidance and recommendations have been shown to raise the chances of success and result in awards. I have personally acted as the primary writer in dozens of pre-proposals and full proposals and increased their score, sometimes enough to reach the payline and sometimes not, but, it is my experience and my warm recommendation, that the applicant would engage a scientific specialist in their specific area, for planning the research by drafting it, and, a grant consultant for orchestrating the immensely complex preparation process and for advising on writing and grant-related strategy. Please remember that you will have to present in the proposal itself a technical scientific expert as a team member, with a letter and a biosketch - you should be searching for that technical expert for the role of a team member (formal engagement with the prospective expert begins only upon award and only if awarded; the cost is covered by the award). Once such a scientific expert has been identified, they as technical experts in your field should provide the experimental planning by drafting the research plan, which a grant consultant will help write with a template and with tailored feedback. These are two distinct specialties that serve two distinct functions in a grant: Technical methodological expertise, informed by the most recent literature on a specific set of experimental methods, and, grant expertise, informed by the most recent regulations, reviewer expectations (hard and soft), agency guidelines and policies, and calls. The former is needed both pre-submission and during the project, the latter only when preparing the proposal. The former is needed to conceptually plan and draft methods and background that correspond with the knowledge of the best active scientists in the field (the reviewers); the latter is needed to help the former show the rigor, novelty, and feasibility at the right level of detail and in the right place. The best formula for winning an award would be: Identify the expert in your specific scientific field who will be responsible for designing the plan by drafting it and for participating in it's execution, and, identify a grant consultant who can help the expert and the team to translate a drafted plan into the format and expectations of a funding agency in a specific mechanism. Please be advised that AI should not be used for creating content de novo, both because AI is ineffective for de novo scientific writing and because funding agencies increasingly prohibit and are flagging text that was generated by AI. The team should create drafts de novo, for which recommendations will be provided. The process: - Preparing an application would typically require 10, 20, or 30 hours of consultancy, depending on project size and structure. For large projects, e.g., multi-site clinical trials, large consortia, or pre-commercialization grants (for example, BARDA), 40 or 50 hours may be expected. - Following an introductory call at no cost (under an NDA), a kick-off meeting is scheduled. - The kick-off includes reviewing together: the project checklist, the registration steps, and the first and most important template – the research plan. Guidance and action items are provided for registration and for the template. - Thereafter, weekly, additional templates are sent to the team, while the team returns completed templates for feedback. - In weekly meetings, detailed feedback, guidance, and suggestions are provided regarding: written sections, new templates, registration follow-up, and strategy (e.g., understanding what capacities will be expected, identifying missing resources, deciding who should be contacted for a letter, etc.). Preparations would usually take 6 weeks, although some grants can reach full readiness within 3 weeks, while for other projects (specifically clinical trials) 10 weeks of preparations should be taken into account to allow collection of the required documents.
