Profile Summary

I am Smruti Rekha Dash, completed my PhD degree in Ceramic Engineering (Porous Hydroxyapatite, Synthesis, Characterization and Invitro study) under the supervision of Prof. Santanu Bhattacharyya from NIT Rourkela in 2016.  I also have completed my M. Tech in Ceramic Engineering (Refractory Ceramics) and Masters in Chemistry from NIT Rourkela.

I have my Master's degree in Chemistry as well as Material science.  I have performed extensive research on Refractory material and Ceramic materials as well as nanomaterials. My key expertise includes the synthesis of new materials of various compositions adhering to the laboratory techniques and some new modified techniques followed by their characterization by different techniques. I have experience in working with scientific instruments like X-ray diffractometers, Scanning Electron microscopes, Thermogravimetry, and Differential Scanning calorimeter and Porosimeter.
In my M. Tech, I worked on a refractory project which was sponsored by Tata Steel-Jamshedpur. The project was the Development of improved Tap-Hole Clay for Blast Furnace Tap-Hole. In this project, I was working with various materials like calcined bauxite, silica, graphite, silicon nitride, coke, and ultra-fine carbon. Type and Role of organic binders in taphole clay, manufacturing process, characteristics of tap hole clay and different lab tests such as PLC, BD, AP, Compressive strength, Volatile Matter Test, Phase analysis are the main objectives of the project. 
Also, I worked on a summer Project of the Synthesis & characterization of metal oxide nanoparticles by wet chemical approach, at IMMT, BBSR. The project was to develop and synthesise of nanostructures of iron oxide and zinc oxide. The final products were characterized by SEM & TEM and indicated the formation of nanoparticles on the order of 80-90 nm.
In my M.Sc. career, I also got an opportunity to do a summer training programme in NTPC, Kaniha in the wastewater treatment plant.
In my PhD research, I worked on Porous Hydroxyapatite Ceramic material and its characterizations. I had also optimized the wet chemical synthesis process of Hydroxyapatite powder. Various kinds of porogen used for porosity are paraffin, almond crust, naphthalene, carbon, wax spheres, sugar, and hydrogen peroxide. Main work includes high-quality green bodies, processing of heat-treatment and sintering, and characterization of properties including porosity, pore size distribution and mechanical properties. The synthesized porous material can be broadly used as filter material, insulating material, drug delivery, Bioceramic coating etc. I had presented my work at various national and international conferences that were held in IITs, IISc and NIT Rourkela. I have also published one international paper from my work.  For my innovative contribution to research, I got selected for the Young Scientist training workshop held in IISc Bangalore.
