RESEARCH EXPERIENCE 1) Post Doctoral Research Associate (December 2014 to March 2017), Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata (A unit of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India) • Independently demonstrated the role of a β-sheet breaker peptide derived from thrombin template in inhibiting amyloid beta aggregates. • Devised and executed a new method to study the time course of destabilization of amyloid beta aggregates on surface plasmon resonance. • Led collaborations across diverse departments to critically substantiate the ability of the inhibitor peptide to protect cells against the toxic oligomers by confocal studies and also implemented bioinformatic approaches to define the binding regions between the inhibitor and amyloid beta aggregates. • Proposed a general model for inhibition/destabilization mechanism by synthetic peptides. • Validated the ability of ubiquitin and its synthetic peptides to destabilize fibrin(ogen)-amyloid beta co-aggregates by AFM studies. • Mentored a Master’s student - supervised the theoretical and research work for thesis submission. 2) Post Doctoral Fellow (March 2013 to June 2014), Centro di Rierca E. Menni, Fondazione Poliambulanza- Istituto Ospedaliero, Brescia, Italy • Extensively involved in the isolation and characterization of placenta stem/progenitor cells and their derivatives such as conditioned media from human placenta. • Successfully demonstrated the ability of human placenta derived mesenchymal stromal cells as well as derived conditioned media to inhibit differentiation of monocyte into dendritic cells in contact culture as well as transwell settings. • Compiled two book chapters on the types of placenta cells, their characterisation and therapeutic applications. 3) Research Associate (August 2012 to February 2013), Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata • Extensively involved in the biochemical characterization of the drug ‘Placentrex’. • Provided the first indication of the existence of corticotropin releasing factor-like peptide by immunoassay in the drug. 4) PhD Fellow (January 2005 – May 2012), Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata. Thesis title: Solution Properties of Proteins: its Application to Biological Extracts • Developed a novel approach to identify harmonic overtones and undertones accompanying the excitation light in a spectrofluorimeter. • Identified a peptide pool in an aqueous extract of human placenta, used as a wound healing drug in India under the trade name of Placentrex. • Ascertained the distribution of biologically active free as well as peptide-bound NADPH in the placenta extract. • Demonstrated the regulation of trypsin activity by fibronectin-type III like peptide in the isolated peptide fraction, indicating its possible role in regulation of debridement. • Established the existence of an ubiquitin-like peptide in the extract with a hitherto unreported collagenase activity. • Indicated the presence of carbohydrate components in placenta extract and also employed COMET assay to evaluate the DNA damaging potential of the extract. • Mentored and trained Masters students in their thesis preparation.
