Profile Summary

I call my business "All-Purpose Guru." As the name implies, I am a multi-specialist non-fiction writer and editor. Currently I am most active in the area of sustainability and green living through my blog Sustaining Our World. My specialties include music, sustainability and the environment, health, Scripture, libraries, research, and writing. I have written on numerous other topics as well, and I can edit work on subjects I would never attempt to write. I have a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Iowa and a distinguished record of scholarly publication. My specialty is the history of the trombone, which may seem very narrow, but I have had to become conversant with the social and political history of Europe, North America, and South America. In addition, I am a librarian with the Masters in Library and Information Science from Rosary College (since renamed Dominican University). I have worked as a cataloger in a law school library and a dental school library as well as in a music library. I also have experience serving at a general reference desk, where I have had to help students of all majors and levels of sophistication find the information they need. Since leaving academia and starting All-Purpose Guru, my freelance experience includes editorial work at MyDocumate and Christian Editorial Services. MyDocumate specializes in helping Chinese students gain admission to graduate schools at English-speaking universities. I have helped students in many different fields with their CVs and personal statements. I write four blogs. One of them, Sustaining Our World, demonstrates my yearning for more knowledge. Three years of service on the Sustainability Committee of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro opened my eyes to practical steps the university was taking to reduce energy and water usage, among other things. I recognized that many of them were also practical for individual households. The experience changed me from a dabbler in environmental matters to a researcher.
