My professional experiences are primarily focused in the biomedical sciences, both in terms of research and education. At present, I am a Content Editor for the American Institutes of Research, in which I am on a team of subject matter experts involved in reviewing high level research and assessments. This process involves reviewing current trends in the field of biomedical research, and also integrating such information into the student experience. During this, I coach content writers, perform technical review, and incorporate such work into our final product. I also have professional writing experience as a Content Developer at Course Hero. In that capacity, I write and review supplementary educational resources for the biological sciences, nursing, and medical terminology. I also train junior Content Developers in ensuring appropriate clarity, formatting, and grammar for all content produced. My educational background is focused heavily in the biological sciences, in which I have a Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience from the University of Rochester and Doctorate in Neuroscience from the University at Buffalo. There, I became an expert in ion-channel biophysics and physiology of synaptic systems, in which I utilized electrophysiology and real-time imaging to investigate synaptic functioning. Specifically, I investigated the role of a crucial brain protein, the NMDA receptor, in controlling neuronal calcium fluxes. This is important, as calcium is necessary for learning and memory, but in high concentrations, can lead to cell death associated with stroke and traumatic brain injury. To this latter point, during my post-doctoral work at the University at Buffalo, our team discovered that the NMDA receptor can be activated by mechanical forces alone (i.e. during traumatic bran injury). In relation to this project, I served as Key Personnel for an NIH R21 grant investigating how NMDA receptor signaling is altered by varying mechanical stimuli. During this entire process, I produced a number of original manuscripts and abstracts, and was also heavily involved in grant-writing for the laboratory. With these skills and knowledge, I have taught courses in the biological sciences to a diversity of students both in terms of their educational background and overall goals. The vast majority of my teaching experiences were performed as an Assistant Professor of Biology at Trocaire College, a small career-focused college located in Buffalo. There, I instructed a number of courses, including Human Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Pharmacology, and several elective courses. In addition, I have significant part-time teaching experience, in which this ranges from teaching introductory biology at community colleges (Erie Community College and Niagara County Community College), to teaching graduate level neuroscience (Daemen College). Further, I have engaged in a diverse set of instructional modalities, including face-to-face, online and hybrid learning. As such, I am highly proficient in innovative strategies as it pertains to LMS use and technology for the purposes of student success.
