Profile Summary

My research interests are wide and varied. My past and current research interests include understanding the effects of environmental factors e.g. stress, on visceral organ health. I am primarily interested in neurophysiological and pharmacological changes, changes in smooth muscle properties and changes in whole organ function and morphology. My future ambition is to develop my research into the realm of public health. The reason being I would like move toward a position where the results of my work is applicable in the 'bigger' picture; I would like to apply my research skills to make changes at the level of the population and/or community. In this regard, I am interested in global health issues including infections disease, environment, access to clean water and education. I am interested in population health, mental health and lifestyle effects on health. I have a vast skill set I would like to apply in this forum including critical thinking, data collection and analysis, presentation of complex data sets and concepts, literature searching, verbal and written communication skills, and fantastic team working skills. Lastly, I am extremely compassionate and team-orientated, I enjoy people and will do whatever it takes to get a job done. My priority is always to do a good job toward a meaningful end. I would like opportunities to expand my business acumen. I have the research and problem solving skills that are highly applicable and transferable in to the business setting. My current research project funded by the Urology Care Foundation involves characterising changes in peripheral and spinal cord neuronal pathways mediating aberrant bladder activity in an animal model of chronic painful bladder syndrome (PBS). Methods of choice include immunohistochemistry and bladder stretch/tension recording. This work involves collaboration with internationally renowned clinical and basic research groups at University of Southern California, University of Colorado, Boulder, and University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. My PhD project was funded by the Department of Education. I investigated the effects of X-ray ionising irradiation on normal bladder structure and function in rodent models, as well as identified a biomarker predictive of radiation-induced bladder toxicity from patients receiving radiotherapy treatment. I was industrious in establishing a transnational research collaboration with the Northern Ireland Clinical Trials Center based at the Belfast City Hospital, whereby I established the time-dependent expression of urinary protein levels, bladder symptom severity, and quality of life in patients receiving radiotherapy treatment for prostate cancer. These findings form the basis of a larger clinical trial which will be used to assess suitability of patients for radiation treatment and appropriate treatment regimens thus reduce radiation-induced bladder dysfunction and preserve patient quality of life. These findings have also formed preliminary results for several prestigious grant applications and helped secure a £514,518 award sponsored by the Medical Research Council (UK) (Project reference MR/M012425/1).
