Dr. Anne Dunning has built her expertise in transportation systems, advocating for a sustainable multimodal balance of pragmatic engineering and idealistic planning for the movement of people and goods. She has investigated the specific workings of all modes from airlines to pedestrians, including the multimodal integration needed for a resilient regional or global transportation system. Her work has delved into project evaluation, project economics, freight systems, rural transit, privacy, equity, resilience from incidents and disasters, and sustainability. She has conducted projects for federal, state, local, and private-sector sponsors. She has also contributed in multiple international research groups, including the Network on European Communications and Transport Activities Research (NECTAR). She has explored transportation in a number of scales and contexts, such as nationwide personal transportation in relation to land use, pedestrian trip chaining in small commercial neighborhoods, the forces and trends shaping the global airline industry, and ecologically sensitive transportation for the unique context of national parks and their surrounding communities. She served as an in-residence transportation scholar for the National Park Foundation, which included contributing to the environmental impact statement for the rehabilitation of the alpine Going-to-the-Sun Road, a National Civil Engineering Historic Landmark. She also conducted research in house at Port Houston for more than a year, advancing the smooth flow of industrial freight from docks to distribution centers. Methodologically speaking, she developed particular expertise as a practitioner and teacher of advanced research design, refining research objectives and determining the best methodology to address a question at hand. She has managed and conducted major research projects using database theory, geographic information systems, statistics, surveys, and interviews. She worked closely with the big-data firm StreetLight Data to develop a statistically valid approach to using big data to identify truck origins and destinations along their routes. She has also worked closely with colleagues proffering expertise in traffic simulation and urban design. Dr. Dunning earned her doctorate in civil engineering in 2005 under Michael Meyer at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She earned tenure in the Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture at Clemson University and continued her academic career at the University of Kansas. She made a career change toward industry in 2017 to spend more than a year at Port Houston. She now acts as a freelance researcher from her farmstead outside Houston. Prior to engaging transportation planning and engineering, Anne earned a triple major from Cornell University in Russian, English, and comparative literature. Living and working in Saint Petersburg, she helped establish the first western youth hostel in Russia. Returning to America, she worked in project management for a computer systems integrator. She spent a year teaching English in Pusan, South Korea before beginning her graduate studies.
