Profile Summary

After completion of my post-graduation from Calcutta University, I joined department of Zoology at University of North Bengal, under a project “Impact of Pesticides on both target and Non- Target organisms in tea plantations of Darjeeling Districts” as project fellow in 2009. This was my first introduction to field of Entomology. As a beginner in Entomological research, I had given the task for rearing various geometrid tea pests on their natural host plant as well as their alternate hosts. Collecting samples from various tea estates ranging from Terai region to the Dooars of North Bengal and rearing them in laboratory to maintain continuous supply for different experiments was my first task in the Entomology Research Unit of Prof. Ananda Mukhopadhyay. Under his guidance, parallelly, I started my PhD course work and registered for PhD in 2012. My PhD project was entitled as “Nutritional Ecology of Tea Loopers on Natural and Artificial Diets from Darjeeling Terai and the Dooars”. I formulated synthetic diets for three geometrid caterpillars, viz., Biston (=Buzura) suppressaria, Hyposidra talaca and H. infixaria. The quality of these synthetic diets were then analyzed based on their acceptance to target caterpillars, survivability, life-cycle parameters, major hydrolases and detoxifying enzyme profile, nutritional indices of reared pests and compared to natural hosts. This was the first ever attempt for complete rearing these tea pests on synthetic diets. After my PhD thesis submission in March, 2016, I joined Tocklai Tea Research Institute, as Research Associate in a Unilever-CABI funded Project “A move towards more ecological production of tea” in July, 2016. My key responsibilities were monitoring the experiments at field, undertaking a survey of natural enemies and identifying them, execution of experiments and data processing. Apart from these, I had to coordinate the work undertaken by the research fellows under same project and to write documents for varied target audiences, including project reports for a non-technical audience and research papers. During this period of 2009-till date, I had presented papers in various conferences and published papers in both national and international journals.
