Profile Summary

Summary: I have used cell and systems biology approaches to understanding the development of hyphal networks. I am interested in how filamentous fungi sense their environment and adapt their growth accordingly. My research has focused developing the expertise to understand the regulation of growth, extracellular sensing and cell communication in model fungal species. These species are very amenable to genetic manipulation and a useful model for more complex organisms such as mammals. More recently, I have worked as a private tutor and as a freelance editor for a private journal pre-submission service. Research Projects: The main project I focused on during my graduate studies was the characterisation of core components required for polarised growth. One major accomplishment was determining that BemA, a scaffold protein for the Rho-GTPase Cdc42, localises to hyphal tips and has important roles in A. nidulans growth and asexual reproduction. I was awarded a national research prize for this work, and both the major publication and the method development article are regularly cited. My postdoctoral studies were highly productive and I was awarded a prize for research excellence at a major international conference. The studies focussed on understanding how fungal development is affected by extracellular communications from other individuals in the vicinity; this signalling is essential for the coordination of physiological responses in all living organisms and for various developmental processes in multicellular species, such as cell fusion. One important finding was highlighted in Science Signaling. Technical Skills: * Molecular Biology: Cloning, vector construction (gene deletion, GFP tagging, epitope tagging, mutant alleles, overexpression), qRT-PCR, EMSA, heterologous protein expression in E. coli and yeast, protein purification, Southern blotting, immunoprecipitation, immunoblotting, general molecular techniques * Cell Biology: Fungal strain construction, phenotypic analysis, light microscopy including timelapse, widefield deconvolution microscopy, confocal microscopy, image processing (Huygens deconvolution, Imaris, ImageJ, Adobe Photoshop) * Systems Biology: Microarray analysis, next-generation sequencing (Illumina), phosphoproteome analysis, ChIP-seq analysis Writing and editing: * I have developed a clear and concise writing style. In addition to writing a PhD thesis and assisting with several grants, I have co-authored 10 research and review articles. For example, one review article was published in a prestigious Nature Reviews journal. * As a private tutor I have edited several assignments and dissertations and provided feedback for improvement. * I am currently working as a manuscript editor. This involves editing language and clarifying scientific discrepancies.
