Profile Summary

After obtaining Master Degree with distinction in Applied Physics in October 2015, a life-changing journey has brought me to Australia, almost exactly at the antipodes of my home-country, Italy. Here, I started a new phase of my life by enrolling into a Ph.D. program in the Research School of Engineering at the Australian National University, which then led to my current job as a post-doctoral fellow. Back in my university years I did big leaps in terms of subjects and topics, ranging from the far-away galaxies studied in Astrophysics during my BS, to the microscopic world of cells and proteins analysed in my MS. I trained my mind to immediately jump across different length-scales and bridge the physical processes that happen therein. I have taken advantage of this peculiar university path to extrapolate and investigate the physics and chemistry at the nanoscale by going smaller and deeper into the nano-world during my PhD. My PhD aimed to develop a novel optical, nanotechnology-enabled platform to detect bio-chemical molecules harmful to our body and to the environment. Two years after, our research group has achieved a record detection of refractive index changes through a fully optical sensor which is among the best in the literature. I am currently employed as a Research Fellow at the ANU and I am working on an ambitious multidisciplinary project focused on photocatalysis for renewable energies and carbon capture/conversion. I run quantum (GPAW) and classical (COMSOL) simulations, design experiments and perform measurements with the aim to gain deeper understanding and broader knowledge of the different technologies that I am working with. I am expert in material science and all the relevant characterization techniques, incuding UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, cathodoluminescence, X-Ray powder diffraction, scanning- transmission- and atomic microscopy. I have very good knowledge of Matlab, Mathematica and Origin for data analysis and representation.
