Epidemiology used to traditionally focus on managing diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites. However, modern-day epidemiology has expanded to include chronic disease and injury. This has been prompted by the eradication of many infectious diseases in the developed world through the use of vaccinations and improved hygiene. Instead, epidemiologists–at least in high-income countries–have now shifted their focus toward the rising epidemic of noncommunicable diseases such as lung cancer, type II diabetes, and obesity. The work of epidemiologists has been instrumental in developing an understanding of pandemic viruses such as Coronavirus (Covid-19). They approach their work by considering the various hereditary, behavioral, social, environmental, and healthcare factors involved.
Epidemiologists are public health professionals who study patterns and causes of disease and injury in human and animal populations. When there is e.g., a tuberculosis, avian flu or food poisoning outbreak, epidemiologists are among the first responders. These “Disease Detectives” search for the cause of communicable diseases, identify who is at risk, determine how to curb disease spread, and find ways to prevent it from re-occurring. They fulfill their role through research, fieldwork, community education, and public health policy.
Epidemiologists typically do the following:
· Perform studies of public health problems to find ways to prevent and treat them
· Collect epidemiology data through sampling, field observations, interviews, and surveys
· Analyze epidemiology data with statistical methods
· Perform laboratory research on disease agents and ways to combat them
· Communicate their findings to health practitioners, policymakers, non-profit organizations, and the public
· Develop and manage public health programs
Epidemiology experts generally work in public health for local, state or national governments, in hospitals, or as epidemiologist researchers for universities, government agencies (e.g., the CDC in the US, NHS in the UK, and ECDC in Europe), and organizations such as WHO.
Some epidemiologists work in private industry for health insurance or pharmaceutical companies or do public health advocacy for non-profit companies; for example, pharmacoepidemiologists study the use and effects of clinical drugs in large populations. There are also epidemiology content writers, who specialize in writing in this area for academia, media, and industry.

Epidemiologists have job titles that range between Applied Epidemiologist, Consultant Epidemiologist, Clinical Epidemiologist, Epidemiology Consultant, Field Epidemiologist, Medical Epidemiologist, Pharmaceutical Epidemiologist, Research Epidemiologist, and Veterinary Epidemiologist.
Epidemiology experts typically have a master’s or doctoral degree from a university. These degrees are either in public health or medicine, with some specialist programs available focused on epidemiology itself.
Freelance epidemiologist professionals charge a consulting fee that generally ranges from 40–100 USD per hour depending on how specialized the required skillset is and the level of experience necessary.
The hourly fee can be negotiated upfront based on the estimated number of project hours, or a flat fee (for projects of a defined scope) can be discussed. If you need short-term/temporary epidemiology consulting, then hiring a freelance consultant is a convenient and cost-effective approach.
The best way to attract the top Kolabtree consultant epidemiologists is to make your project description informative. You will need to provide information on the following:
· Skills required (e.g., formulating public health policy)
· What the project area is (e.g., smoking and lung cancer)
· What the project entails (e.g., advocacy on health policy related to smoking)
· What the deliverables are (be specific about what you need the outputs to be)
· Duration of the project (provide an estimate of how many hours work you will need per week/by when you need the project to be completed)
· By when you need to hire (having more leeway on this will give you more time to choose the best expert for your needs)
· Your budget (per hour or fixed fee)
If you are unsure what exactly is required, providing as much detail as possible will allow the experts to still make an informed bid for your project and suggest the best routes forward.
Epidemiology experts offer skills that cut across several disciplines. Our platform enables clients to connect and collaborate with top consultants in the field.
