I have a Ph.D. in theoretical physics, and 33 years of experience in mathematical and computational modeling in fluid dynamics, signal processing, data analysis, plasma physics, electromagnetics, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), and space radiation environment prediction. This includes the design, development, and optimization of algorithms for multi-spectral sensors, passive sensors and radars, modeling of wave propagation, scattering, absorption, reflection and transmission, shock waves, multi-fluid systems, inverse scattering, remote sensing, and multi-layered materials. This includes 18 years working in private industry, and 9 years at the NASA Goddard and Marshall Space Flight Centers doing satellite operations, space environment prediction, and research in magnetospheric, ionospheric, and solar plasma physics. I won about $1.6 M from NSF as PI to do theoretical and computational modeling of MHD processes in partially and fully ionized regions of the solar atmosphere. I was the science lead on a Phase 1 NASA SBIR project to develop a satellite data driven MHD model for predicting solar flares. For this project I proposed the idea, developed the model, supervised its implementation, and interpreted the results. I recently won a contract from the NASA Kennedy Space Center to develop a new idea for enabling RF communication through the plasma sheath around hypersonic vehicles. I have a Public Trust clearance, and have held DOD Secret clearances.

I published papers in ionospheric, magnetospheric, solar, and fusion plasma physics. I modeled partially and fully ionized single and multi-fluid plasmas in magnetic fields, including linear and nonlinear waves, shock waves, anisotropic transport processes, ionization, and radiation. A strong focus has been on modeling effects of anisotropic electrical and thermal conduction, viscosity,
and thermoelectric current drive on heating and acceleration processes in multi-fluid plasmas.

I modeled electromagnetic (EM) wave propagation, absorption, and scattering in isotropic and anisotropic media, and designed periodic and layered thin film materials for radar and infrared cross section prediction and reduction. I published a paper presenting an analytic solution for the scattered EM field from spheres with anisotropic EM properties. This solution was used as a test case for a 3 D radar cross section MOM code for which I supervised the generalization to include anisotropic and inhomogeneous boundary conditions. Electric field and combined field integral equation versions of this code were developed.

I developed optimized inverse scattering algorithms to determine the time dependent geometry, and EM properties of semiconductor surfaces from multi-spectral measurements of reflected light intensity. I advised and supervised software developers to integrate these algorithms into an active optical sensing system for real time process control of the etching of semiconductor wafers.

I was the lead algorithm developer on a Navy funded project to develop a probabilistic algorithm to identify ships using data from a radar and a passive sensor.

I performed consulting work that involved developing models of elastic surface wave propagation as part of the design of a sensor system, and modeling wall ablation due to shock waves and high temperature plasmas generated by nuclear explosions in underground test chambers.

I served as the team lead on the following projects: (1) A 4 year NASA funded project to design, build, test, and simulate two prototype pulsed inductive plasma thrusters for satellite electric propulsion. This involved leading a geographically distributed team of scientists and engineers working at five government, academic, for-profit, and non-profit institutions. (2) An ONR funded project that involved developing MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes for guidance, and Bragg grating sensor networks and associated chaos based signal processing algorithms for non-destructive evaluation of air frames and other structures. This project also involved leading a geographically distributed team from five government, academic, for profit, and non-profit institutions. (3) A 2 year IRAD project to generalize a 3 D finite element electromagnetics code to compute the radar cross section of arbitrarily shaped bodies. (4) Five NSF funded projects to develop models and nonlinear, time dependent MHD simulations of the solar atmosphere.

I have 3 years of supervisory experience as a Science Branch Manager and as Manager of a Science and Systems Engineering Group, supervising up to 15 scientists and engineers matrixed out to a range of projects. As a PI and supervisor I was responsible for hiring, mentoring, and evaluating employees.
