Profile Summary

Having formal studies in Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), I passionately worked in the intersection of pathophysiological studies and biological microtechnologies by developing in vitro models, based on three-dimensional multicellular constructs, within a microfluidic platform (microphysiological systems, organs-on-chip) that recapitulate the in vivo structure and functionality of the human microvasculature. Furthermore, we have extensively implemented such platforms to dissect key pathological events contributing to vascular dysfunction and cancer metastasis, including unique chemotactic axes and disruptive vascular flow patterns. My interdisciplinary research efforts in biomedical science and engineering has led me to investigate the role of biomechanical signals (vascular flow, extracellular matrix stiffness, chemokine gradients) in the physiological function of the human microvasculature, and how the perturbation of such signals contributes to dysfunctional states and pathogenesis (atherosclerosis, cancer metastasis, lymphedema). We are able to dissect the biological implications of these extracellular factors by meticulously engineering in vitro systems, within microfluidic devices, that recapitulate the tissue architecture and microenvironmental cues coupled with human-sourced cells, thus ensuring their physiological relevance and functionality. Such platforms, known as organs-on-chip and microphysiological systems, have also proven to be exceptionally useful as pre-clinical models for screening human response to therapeutic biologics. In fact, one of my dissertation projects is a collaborative effort with Amgen Inc. to predict the pharmacokinetics of their subcutaneously-delivered therapeutic antibodies using our microphysiological platforms.
