Profile Summary

I am a passionate and creative practitioner of the science of learning - about improving lives through by understanding the dynamic interplay between learning and instruction. My scholarly work has focused on three major lines of applied research: (1) socio-cognitive interventions with preschool-aged at-risk children; (2) literacy and language instruction and assessment of elementary-aged children; and (3) development and evaluation of academic interventions for students and teachers. Each line has included rigorous, scientific, quantitative or mixed-method projects for inquiry. Additionally, I have developed several interests in methodology (e.g., assessment, survey, observation, program evaluation) and advanced analysis techniques (e.g., multivariate analysis, multi-level models, latent variable models, etc.). Part researcher, part educator, and part innovator/creator – I have studied the hows and whys for cognitive, academic, and social skills development. I have developed programs, tools, and techniques for learning and instruction, particularly in the areas of literacy and numeracy. I've developed curricula and instructional assessments for both reading and math for preK-middle school students. I am also fascinated by information and data, for analysis and for utility. As an empirical scientist, it is critical to process and analyze data of all sorts to inform our working models (analysis). In the science of learning, data is an active tool that provides students with feedback and instructors with indicators of progress in order to optimize learning. I am specifically interested in data visualization in practical settings. Thus, I've investigated and developed tools for realtime data-based decision-making.
