Profile Summary

I am an ecologist and environmental scientist with interests in linking global environmental changes to human well-being. My research has spanned disciplines including ecology, evolution, marine biology, the environmental sciences, water resource management, environmental economics, and conservation of natural resources. I have the expertise, and eagerness, to assist in roles as a writer, editor, and consultant. (Please see my website for more detail on my experience https://craiglayman.com/) I am a Senior Fellow with the Center for Environment and Sustainability, and a Research Professor of Biology, at Wake Forest University. I am in a role that allows me to work remotely and pursue opportunities outside my teaching and research efforts at Wake Forest. Before pursuing this more flexible academic track, I was a tenured Full Professor at North Carolina State University, a Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Fellow in the Applied Ecology Department hired as a founding member of the Global Environmental Change and Human Well-being Cluster. I received my Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution from Texas A&M University in 2004 (with a Minor in Philosophy). I also was a Yale Donnelley Postdoctoral Fellow and completed a year-long Fulbright Scholarship for research and education projects in Venezuela. I have 158 publications (cited more than 15,500 times; h-index of 57) in 66 different peer-reviewed journals, spanning many sub-disciplines. I have served as Editor-in-Chief for the peer-reviewed journals Food Webs and Caribbean Naturalist and as Handling Editor for the Oecologia and PLoS One. I currently review papers spanning a wide range of topics for the editing companies Editage (Cactus Communications) and Editor Bar. Over the last three years, I have reviewed/edited for more than 150 different journals. I also am a grant writer and editor for Euroleader. These experiences reflect a strong foundation to build from in scientific writing and editing roles. Since 2019, my editing career has grown rapidly with direct requests for my assistance and through online freelance platforms. In recent months I have completed a variety of jobs, including writing NSF SBIR grants, preparing press releases for science-based companies, reviewing conservation documents, writing or editing business/economics papers, and editing dissertations across diverse sub-disciplines. I also serve as a writing and general advisor for current and prospective graduate students. Throughout my 26 years of teaching and mentoring secondary, undergraduate, and graduate students, I have emphasized the importance of effective written communication. I enjoy this process-based approach to education that helps others hone their writing skills. In doing so, I have gained experience with the formats and conventions of disciplines quite different from mine and with people on varied career paths. I recognize the importance of crafting writing for specific target audiences—a key consideration in all writing endeavors. My rate is always negotiable.
