Profile Summary

Parasitology is a passion that started way back during my undergraduate days, when I had my first peek at the intestinal bugs of frogs. This zeal continued into my PhD, where I worked on glucose metabolism of the malarial parasite. An intensive two-month summer course in Parasitology at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) enthused me to move beyond Plasmodium biology and explore the process of differentiation in African trypanosomes. Though the crux of my interest lies in parasite metabolism and stage differentiation, I am also interested in environment sensing by cells. Hence, I have moved to working with a more genetically malleable system, Caulobacter crescentus. I am currently looking into the nutrient sensing mechanisms in this bacteria with the aim of understanding similar processes in other cells of biomedical importance. I am well acquainted with techniques in biochemistry and cell biology, with some basic knowledge of immunology as well.
