In such a scenario, leading pharma companies and scientists are in a race to develop a cure for the disease. Mesenchymal stem cells or the use of MSCs form one such treatment strategies against COVID-19. The S protein of the virus identifies angiotensin-I converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor and enters the cell of its host.\u00a0 Once into the cell, the immune system of the body produces a large number of cytokines (IL-2, IL-6, IL-7, GSCF, IP10, MCP1, MIP1A, and TNF\u03b1) in an attempt to kill the virus. The release of these inflammatory factors results in a severe <\/span><b>cytokine storm<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a phenomenon that leads to edema, multiple organ dysfunction syndromes <\/span><b>(MODS)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, acute respiratory distress syndrome <\/span><b>(ARDS)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>immune cell depletion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and death. (1-3)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Until now, there is no consensus among healthcare authorities on the clinical classification of COVID-19, however, most agree that the disease range between its mild to severe or critically severe forms. (4,5)<\/p>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ACE-2 receptors are present in the heart, liver, AT2 of lungs, digestive organ, kidney, and in almost all endothelial and smooth muscle cells. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>IL:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Interleukin;\u00a0 <\/span><b>GSCF:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor; <\/span><b>IP:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Induced Protein; <\/span><b>MCP:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein; <\/span><b>MIP:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Macrophage Inflammatory Proteins; <\/span><b>TNF:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Tumor Necrosis Factor<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Role_Of_Stem_Cells_In_Fight_Against_COVID-19\"><\/span><b>Role Of Stem Cells In Fight Against COVID-19<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>At present, Remdesivir is the only drug to obtain an \u2018emergency use authorization\u2019 from the USFDA. However, there is limited information about its safety and efficacy. (6) Therefore, one needs to consider alternatives to the use of Remdesivir. Furthermore, these <\/span><b>studies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are <\/span><b>limited to influenza viruses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and have <\/span><b>produced conflicting results<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Thus such a situation demanded the use of MSCs in human subjects <\/span><b>(Table 2)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affected with coronavirus respiratory infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Table 2: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidence<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the use of MSCs for the treatment of COVID-19. However, one needs to consider the results of the current on-going trials to fully ascertain the above fact.<\/p>\n<p>Presently there are around 20 clinical trials (n) that are in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kolabtree.com\/blog\/ensuring-reproducibility-in-ai-driven-research-how-freelance-experts-can-help-in-biotech-and-healthcare\/\">research<\/a> pipeline for furthering our knowledge on the role of MSC in COVID-19. (7) These trials can be categorized as those using:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MSCs (n=8, involving around 396 participants)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MSC-derivatives (n=12; involving around 561 participants)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, some of the <\/span>potential sources of MSCs<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used in these trials include, <\/span><b>UC-MSCs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>UCB-MSCs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>UC-Wharton\u2019s Jelly MSCs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>UC-MSCs-CM<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>AT-MSCs Exo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
