Tom Mitchell(C.S professor da C.M.U.) categoriza a aprendizagem de m\u00e1quinas como um programa de computador que se diz aprender da experi\u00eancia \"E\" com respeito a alguma classe de tarefas \"T\" e medida de desempenho \"P\", se seu desempenho em tarefas em \"T\", como medido por \"P\", melhora com a experi\u00eancia \"E\". Em palavras simples, a ess\u00eancia da aprendizagem da m\u00e1quina \u00e9 <em>quando um programa de computador pode melhorar a forma como executa uma determinada tarefa em compara\u00e7\u00e3o com suas performances anteriores<\/em>. Se um programa de computador \u00e9 capaz de melhorar consistentemente em um jogo cada vez que ele joga, ent\u00e3o esse programa de computador est\u00e1 usando a aprendizagem da m\u00e1quina para melhorar seu desempenho.<\/p>\n<p>Isto levanta uma quest\u00e3o cr\u00edtica sobre como um programa de computador pode aprender por si s\u00f3. Por exemplo, a maioria dos programas se comporta da maneira como s\u00e3o instru\u00eddos. Para a grande maioria dos programas de computador existem diretrizes e restri\u00e7\u00f5es sobre o que um programa pode e n\u00e3o pode fazer. Portanto, no in\u00edcio parece estranho que um programa seja capaz de aprender com a experi\u00eancia e de melhorar ap\u00f3s cada tarefa. No entanto, este \u00e9 o prop\u00f3sito e a especialidade da aprendizagem de m\u00e1quinas. A aprendizagem de m\u00e1quinas d\u00e1 aos programas de computador a capacidade de aprender e melhorar. Por exemplo, se uma m\u00e1quina \u00e9 alimentada com toneladas de dados sobre a ind\u00fastria imobili\u00e1ria, logo ela aprender\u00e1 a entender o mercado imobili\u00e1rio com base em fatores como a economia, o mercado de a\u00e7\u00f5es, a taxa de impostos e o crescimento da popula\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p>Por outro lado, a aprendizagem refor\u00e7ada segue uma abordagem diferente da aprendizagem mec\u00e2nica. A aprendizagem refor\u00e7ada alimenta a m\u00e1quina com dados aleat\u00f3rios ou espor\u00e1dicos. Depois de passar por grandes quantidades de dados, a m\u00e1quina \u00e9 capaz de fazer padr\u00f5es e julgamentos dos quais pode aprender. Ent\u00e3o estes padr\u00f5es s\u00e3o avaliados e corrigidos permitindo que a m\u00e1quina obtenha uma melhor compreens\u00e3o da tarefa em m\u00e3os. Por exemplo, os beb\u00eas aprendem uma l\u00edngua ouvindo os outros ao seu redor.
